    Description

1887 Chicago White Stockings Baseball Currency. CORRECTION: This the 1887 version, not 1888. The title has been fixed.

John Esch Collection. By the late 1880s, tobacco cards and trade cards had proven that the popularity of baseball could be a useful advertising device. Trade coupons, known as "Baseball Currency," were produced from 1887-1893 and featured images of famous players and teams of the day. This example, which measures 7.75" x 3.25," depicts the 1887 Chicago White Stockings. The obverse contains woodcut images of Hall of Famers A.G. Spalding and Cap Anson and an advertisement for "H.W. Preston, Jeweler, Albion, NY." The reverse features twelve woodcut portraits of White Stocking players, including Anson, John Clarkson, and Billy Sunday. The advertisement implores the holder of the bill to "Use Preston's Lightning Silver Polish." The currency, which was printed on thin, delicate paper, presents at the VG/EX level with no creases, but some paper loss on two corners. A very fine looking specimen of an attractive series of 19th century baseball ephemera.
