1887 A42 "Kimball's Champions" Album. John Esch Collection. The W.S. Kimball & Co. issued a series of sports cards, entitled "Champions of Sports and Games," in 1887. As a premium item for their faithful customers, they created a lithographed album in which collectors could store the cards. Fifty athletes of several sports were featured, including four baseball players: E.A. Burch, Dell Darling, Hardy Henderson, and Tip O'Neill. Other highlights of the set include famous markswoman Annie Oakley and Heavyweight Champion of the World, "The Boston Strong Boy," John L. Sullivan. These albums are quite scarce and delicate. The example offered here is in VG condition, the only issue being the front cover has partially detached. The string binding is intact, as are all pages; the album is in very strong shape for its age. This issue remains a very attractive and rare piece.
