    Description

1887-90 N172 Old Judge Buck Ewing with Mascot #149 SGC NM-MT 8--None Superior! Arguably the most complete ballplayer of the nineteenth century, Ewing was a catcher who made base thieves tremble when behind home plate, and pitchers tremble when beside it. He hit over .300 in ten different seasons and stole over 350 bases himself. Beyond his elite athletic prowess, Ewing was a highly relevant figure on the business side of the game, a key proponent of the short-lived "Players League" of 1890 that served as the first real challenge to the National League monopoly over the sport's top talent.

Here he charmingly shares the stage of a sepia-toned N172 card with the New York Giants' young mascot, an example that looks even younger than the tiny tot. Minor edge and corner wear represent the only deviations from perfection, as the image is sharply rendered and nearly perfectly centered. This is one of just two examples at the grade, with none superior.
