    1867 Ulysses Base Ball Club Honorary Membership Certificate with Letter - Team Named After Pres. Grant. Post-dating the Civil war by a shade over two year, pre-dating the first professional team by two, and the first major league game by nearly a decade the documents offered in this lot. Named after the Union General and later President of the United States, the Ulysses Base Ball Club operated out of the Nation's Capital.

    Offered are the following pieces:

    -Cover letter dated 10/21/1867 made out to George M. Wood by the Ulysses Club of Washington D.C. Signed by the club secretary, S.P. Wrisley. Reverse has "Acknowledgement of Accompanying Certificate Oct. 26/67" penned in Wood's hand. Measures 5x8" with light wear and fading.

    -Certificate featuring hand-painted "UBBC" interlocking logo in the upper left corner and hand-embellished wording that reads This is to certify that in accordance with the Resolution of April 4, 1867 of the Ulysses Base Ball Club of Washington, D.C. GEORGE M. WOOD is declared an HONORARY MEMBER of said Club to date from June 25th, 1867" Signed by President George E. Kott and the aforementioned secretary. Measures 7.5x10" and exhibits wear with sun-aging around the edges.

    -Original mailing envelope addressed to Wood. Stamp has been removed with partial October postmark visible. Measures 7x10.5" Mild-to-moderate wear with staining.

    A truly unique piece of baseball history with Civil War and Presidential tie-ins.
