Mid-1970's Thurman Munson Game Worn New York Yankees Batting Helmet. He was the heart and soul of the New York Yankees during the 1970's, walking the same glorious and tragic path as Lou Gehrig before him, from team captaincy and World Championship glory to sudden and heartbreaking loss. While Munson would never follow the Iron Horse to Cooperstown, his pinstriped immortality is equally ensured through the retirement of his number "15" and eternal residence in Monument Park. Munson's game used material is the most desirable from that unforgettable decade of Yankees history.

The listed specimen entered the marketplace in 2008 along with a letter of provenance stating that it was launched into the lap of the consignor's father when Munson flung it toward the dugout after striking out at Comiskey Park, sending it tumbling over the low infield wall and into the seats. The flapless fiberglass helmet is correct in every regard for Yankees helmets of the era--tagged (KM Pro Cap), sized (7) and notated (black marker 15 at crown pad) identically to another sold by a Yankees bat boy in a 2012 auction. Scattered cracking and chipping are likely the result of game play and/or Munson's angry outburst that sent this keepsake into the Comiskey Park crowd.

Today its battle-scarred exterior makes it a perfect symbol of its original owner, one of the toughest ballplayers ever to wear the pinstripes. A special relic from the brief but brilliant career of a true Bronx legend. Copy of original owner's letter of provenance. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
