Description

Early 1970's Thurman Munson Game Worn New York Yankees Cap. A pair of documents supplies the ironclad provenance one should demand when collecting game worn caps from the days when a handwritten jersey number served as the sole physical attribution. First, we have a handwritten letter of provenance from Bill Hongach, who writes, "I was a bat boy for the New York Yankees in 1972 & 1973 and became very good friends with Yankee catcher Thurman Munson. This is to certify that this Yankee cap was worn and given to me directly by Thurman Munson."

Hongach backs up that claim with a duplication of a marvelous photo of the young bat boy and the star catcher, the latter signing the image, "To Hondo, The worst bat boy in N.Y. history. Hope to see you next year, Thuman Munson '15.'"

The "New Era [size] 7 1/4" cap predates the retail availability of professional model caps, and exhibits solid sweaty wear. A faded number "15" appears in black marker under visor. Salty sweat staining in the crown suggests a full season of wear under Munson's catcher's helmet. A rare opportunity to own a game worn uniform article from this beloved and tragic Yankees captain. Letter of provenance from former New York Yankees bat boy. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
