Identical style in famous photograph of Yankee Stadium Opening Day, 1923

Early 1920's Boston Red Sox Uniform Sweater. It was exactly a decade earlier that Hall of Fame first baseman Frank Chance led his pinstriped crew onto the field in their new Polo Grounds home as manager of the first official edition of the New York Yankees (formerly the Highlanders), but in this famous image he wears the uniform of the Yanks' most hated rival. Miller Huggins stands with Chance as the warring managers pose for photographers on April 18, 1923 to commemorate the Grand Opening of Yankee Stadium, arguably the most hallowed ground in the history of our National Pastime. The delectable sweater style sported by the visiting legend stands as one of the most coveted uniform pieces beyond those worn in the course of play. An image of Red Sox manager Frank Chance at the Yankee Stadium opener can be seen in this lot listing.

Just a scant handful of survivors exist and this is arguably the finest of the population, a marvelously preserved relic that exhibits barely a sign of nine decades of existence. The player attribution has been lost beneath the sands of time, but little else has, short of a few small moth nibbles to the white felt block lettered "RED SOX" that adorns the heart. The heavy red wool cable knit retains all ten original buttons, including the small occupant at the collar that secures a small strap to close the collar. At interior collar resides the ancient "A.G. Spalding & Bros." manufacturer's label, with a second sewn at lower rear interior tail. The original woven belt is no longer present.

Like the flannel uniform, the warm-up sweater is now many decades deep into extinction, one of the more unfortunate victims of progress and modernity. But its proud display on a mannequin bust in your trophy room will keep that Golden Age pulse ticking. One wonders if another specimen will ever surface again. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
