Circa 1975 Cal Ripken, Jr. Game Worn Putty Hill Optimists Game Worn Jersey, White--Photo Matched. Martin Meloy should have a Major League scouting job. As the included letter of provenance from his brother Scott recounts, Martin served as a coach for the Putty Hill 14-16 age group team of the Parkville (MD) Recreation League in the mid-1970's, passing his baseball knowledge on to a new generation. He was so impressed with the skill of one of his players that he retained three of his jerseys for souvenirs, thinking the kid had the stuff to make it big. But not even he could have imagined how high the lanky little leaguer would soar.

That player was Cal Ripken, Jr.

As the letter of provenance recounts, Martin became terminally ill and, in the final weeks of his life, reached out to Ripken to offer him one of the jerseys he had saved, which the Iron Man gratefully accepted. The other two jerseys appear in this Signature auction.

This is the white version, crafted from mesh with screened identifiers reporting, "Putty Hill 7" on chest and "7" again on verso. Interior collar is tagged "Wilson [size] M." Heavy game wear is evident.

Beyond the included letter of provenance, our consignor supplies two photographs of Ripken wearing this jersey. Locked in a tie with the other Putty Hill jersey on offer in this auction, the garment stands as the earliest known Ripken gamer, one that extends even further his longstanding fidelity to Baltimore baseball. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the advanced Ripken collector. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Letter of provenance from brother of Ripken's Little League coach.
