    Description

    Likely World Championship vintage!

Circa 1929-30 Lefty Grove Game Worn Philadelphia Athletics Cap, MEARS Authentic. Perhaps no single relic on Earth more succinctly distills the glory of Connie Mack's second great Philadelphia Athletics dynasty than the one presented here, a thrilling garment in the format worn during that club's two-season reign as Champions of the World. On a team bursting at the seams with Hall of Fame talent--Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, Al Simmons--the legendary southpaw Grove was arguably the most essential component of all in the unstoppable juggernaut, leading every American League hurler in earned run average, winning percentage and strikeouts each year, claiming the Pitching Triple Crown in the latter half.

The cap exhibits outstanding wear, strongly suggesting the possibility that more than a single season of sweaty action lurks in its lost biography. Ballplayers, and pitchers particularly, are notoriously superstitious, and it would stand to reason that Grove would have tried to harvest every last drop of magic from it after becoming baseball's top ace in the style. The white wool crown is deeply toned with perspiration, the blue visor soft and malleable with just a small patch of wear where his thumb would readjust the level. The golden embossing of the "Spalding" logo at interior leather headband is nearly worn away but the imprint remains clearly visible. Nearby, a golden embroidered "Grove" perfectly matches known exemplars.

Only two game worn Grove garments appear in the public record of major auction house results, the most recent being a six-figure result for a home white jersey that would have been topped by this cap format. We are unaware of the existence of any other Grove caps, suggesting that this might well be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at ownership. LOA from MEARS, Authentic. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
