Rare "Salvation Army" model dates to victory over Boston Red Sox on 9/11 anniversary

2005 Derek Jeter Game Worn New York Yankees Jersey. Exceedingly rare full uniform is a veteran of the greatest rivalry in American sports, a contest that fell on the somber fourth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. While the tragic events of that day will never be forgotten, the Yankees did their part in turning the attention of the baseball community to relief efforts for the costliest natural disaster in American history, the terrible Hurricane Katrina that devastated New Orleans and much of the rest of the Gulf Coast only a few weeks earlier. The right sleeve of the presented home pinstriped jersey worn by the Yankee captain bears a logo patch of "The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services," a reminder to fans that funds and support were desperately needed during the crisis.

The game was a tense pitching duel of deeply contrasting styles--Tim Wakefield's baffling knuckle ball against Randy Johnson's blazing fastball. A Jason Giambi solo shot would provide the game's only run, giving the Yanks a one to nothing victory over their fierce rival in a tight American League East race.

Jeter's jersey, beyond the sleeve patch, appears in familiar, time-tested format, with logo "NY" over the heart and the soon-to-be-retired number "2" on reverse. Lower left front tail is labeled "Majestic Athletic Authentic Collection" with "2005" and size "48" flap tags. Appropriate wear for a single game's action is apparent, and a blue sharpie signature underscoring the rear numeral rates a solid 9/10. The game use and autograph are certified by Major League Baseball and Steiner Sports respectively, assuring ironclad authenticity. A truly special Jeter jersey that carries enormous historical weight for its association with two national tragedies, as well as the fabled Yankees/Red Sox rivalry.

Included in the lot are two other Jeter game worn uniform articles: a pair of well-worn home pinstriped pants from the 2009 season with dark infield clay staining and a large hole at right knee (tagged "Majestic Athletic Authentic Collection, 2 Jeter 35-38 35 09," and a lightly-worn size "7 1/4" Yankees cap with proper number "2" under visor and American flag patch at left temple. The result is a fine, full uniform display. MLB Authentic MT00654217. Authentication sticker from Steiner Sports. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
