1998 Derek Jeter Game Worn Jersey. When Derek Jeter stops wearing a number two pinstriped jersey they'll stop making them. The eventual retirement of Jeter's jersey is as certain as death and Yankee World Championships. Not since Mickey Mantle has a player been so instrumental, so adored, and so perfect for the shark tank of New York City sports that not even the most mean-spirited writer for the Post or News could find a bad word to say. "This kid, right now, the tougher the situation, the more fire he gets in his eyes," manager Joe Torre explained early in Jeter's Bronx tenure. "You don't teach that." His clutch fielding exploits are so memorable as to be defined with simple terms known to any fan. The Flip. The Dive. His clutch Fall Classic hitting crowned him Mr. November.

Presented is a road grey jersey from the glorious 1998 season, a World Championship campaign characterized by 125 victories against just fifty defeats (inclusive of post-season play), and one generally rated second only to 1927 as the finest in team history. As the most celebrated and beloved figure of the current Yankee dynasty, Jeter's shirt is the most desirable of the 1998 team, and it's safe to say that this shirt will one day be viewed in a similar light to the 1927 Gehrig also presented within this auction. The timeless aesthetics of the Yankee road style is in full effect, with "New York" in bold block across the chest, a simple number "2" on verso. A World Series patch on the right sleeve indicates the shirt was ready for October wear, but our study of photography from the two San Diego games finds no match. The jersey is clearly worn, however, but we must date this wear to the regular season and/or earlier playoff rounds. Proper "Russell Athletic Diamond Collection [size] 46" label appears at lower left front tail, above dual flap tags ("100 Polyester" and "2" Extra Length") and the "1998" year swatch. Use is light to moderate, perfectly matching other Jeter gamers from the era. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
