Description

1997 Tony Gwynn Hit #2,722 Game Worn & Signed San Diego Padres Jersey. Tony and Alicia Gwynn were way ahead of their time when they had the hit king change jerseys for specific hits during Mr. San Diego's run for 3,000. This road gray Padres jersey saw use when the Hall of Famer achieved hit #2,778 on September 23, 1997. Team and player identifiers are affixed in tri-color tackle twill, while the franchise patch sits on the left sleeve and the Jackie Robinson silver anniversary patch graces the right sleeve. Meanwhile, the left front tail reveals a "Russell Athletic 50" label with "9/23/97 #2778 L.A." in vintage black felt-tip. Additionally, Gwynn signed the verso, large and bold, in blue sharpie.

This exemplar has a few things going for it. First, all of the jersey specs match up to what Tony is seen wearing that season. Second, The wear is what it should be--light but decently light, including dirt stains on the right shoulder, deriving from the infield, warning track or batting glove transfer. Third, the inscription on the Russell Athletic label is in the same hand as other known Gwynn exemplars LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services.
