1991 Nolan Ryan Seventh No-Hitter Game Worn Jersey with Ryan Letter. He holds the second most untouchable pitching record in baseball after Cy Young's 511 victories, situated over eight hundred strikeouts beyond his closest rival in career numbers with a total of 5,714. This eternal reign was assured by over a quarter century of blazing fastballs, rather definitively establishing Ryan as the greatest power pitcher in the game's history. "Every hitter likes fastballs just like everybody likes ice cream," Reggie Jackson once quipped. "But you don't like it when someone's stuffing it into you by the gallon. That's how you feel when Ryan's throwing balls by you."Whether by elite genetics or pure force of will, Ryan's hundred mile per hour fastball did not abandon him as the decades rolled by, and he was still lighting up the radar gun at the advanced age of forty-four when he took the mound in Arlington, Texas to face the Toronto Blue Jays on May 1, 1991. It had appeared that the date would be remembered only for Rickey Henderson's assumption of the career stolen base record from Lou Brock, but Ryan would expand upon the day's speed theme with an overpowering performance to complete his seventh and final no-hit masterpiece.
The home white knit jersey exhibits light wear from the closing innings of that historic game, and is accompanied by an October 5, 1991 letter on team letterhead signed by both Ryan and Rangers manager Bobby Valentine. It reads:
Dear Item Recipient: This will confirm the authenticity of the Nolan Ryan home game jersey donated to the Steve Palermo Foundation card show for the silent auction. The jersey was worn by Nolan Ryan during the game on May 1, 1991, the date of his seventh no-hitter. Nolan changed uniform tops in the bottom of the 7th inning and finished the game in this top.
Blue and red tackle twill creates a scripted "Rangers" and block number "34" on the jersey chest, balanced by "Ryan 34" on verso. The tagging of Ryan's preferred "W.A. Goodman & Sons" uniform manufacturer is in the collar, with a handwritten "2" likely denoting the late-innings provenance. There is no year tagging, as is proper for Ryan shirts of this period. A 10/10 blue sharpie autograph from Ryan completes the package. Letter of provenance from Nolan Ryan/Bobby Valentine. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph). Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (autograph).
