    The Sandman's earliest known gamer!

1991-93 Mariano Rivera Game Worn Greensboro Hornets Jersey. The greatest closer in the history of Major League Baseball spent five years in the Yankees farm system before getting the call to pack his bags for the Bronx, inclusive of two separate stints with the Greensboro Hornets of the single-A South Atlantic League. He'd make thirty-nine appearances for the team, primarily as a starter, first making the acquaintance of a skinny nineteen-year old kid named Derek Jeter there in 1993. Later this year, the pair will be reunited once again at Cooperstown, for eternity.

An included 1991 Hornets program identifies the young Panamanian as number "14," and those digits are applied in two-tone tackle twill to the back of this road grey knit. "Greensboro" is similarly applied to front. A faded "Wilson [size] 42" label at interior collar bears a handwritten "MR." Heavy wear is indicative of multiple seasons of use.

Not a great deal of period photography from this low-level league is available, but this style can be validated by trading cards of the era. Take a trip to eBay and search for Andy Pettitte's 1992 Classic Best #286 card and you'll find it. You can also Google an article entitled "Greensboro jersey worn by Derek Jeter up for auction" and find the style again, and text quoting a team representative who said he made a point of saving the jerseys of those he saw as Big League probables, including Jeter and Rivera. He notes that this style was retired after the 1993 season when a dispute with the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA forced a name change to the Greensboro Bats for the 1994 season, and the production of a new set of uniforms.
