    Description

1986 Mookie Wilson World Series Game Six Worn Cleats. Hobby history was made here at Heritage in May 2012 when the baseball that split Bill Buckner's wickets in the 1986 Fall Classic, the most painful moment in eighty-six seasons of the Curse of the Bambino, commanded over $400,000 in spirited bidding. Presented is another key relic from that unforgettable October 26, 1986 evening at Shea Stadium, the pair of blue cleats worn by the speedy New York Mets outfielder Mookie Wilson as he hacked the luckiest grounder in franchise history.

The "Tiger" brand footwear shows a bit of handling wear from three decades of storage and proud display, its soles still clinging to infield clay from that unforgettable scamper to first. The underside of each tongue bears a handwritten number "1" in black marker, and a blue sharpie inscription, "To Steve, Best Wishes, Mookie Wilson."

The "Steve" to whom the shoes are inscribed is the son of the gentleman who purchased them from a December 1986 charity auction. A letter of provenance signed by Wilson attests to this provenance, as does a letter from the buyer. The shoes are now mounted on a trophy base with an engraved plaque bearing a quotation from Wilson: "Buckner knows I can fly...so he took a peek." With ironclad provenance and perfect fidelity to game footage, these relics provide a thrilling link to one of the most memorable moments in baseball history. Letter of provenance from Mookie Wilson. Letter of provenance from original collector. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (for Mookie Wilson letter of provenance).
