    A 71-year old record falls...

1985 Rickey Henderson Sets Franchise Single-Season Stolen Base Record Game Worn & Signed New York Yankees Jersey. The Yankees had only officially assumed that moniker the season before a speedy young third baseman named Fritz Maisel--often called "The Catonsville Flash" after his Maryland hometown--topped all American Leaguers with seventy-four base thefts in 1914. For seventy-one years, Maisel would occupy that franchise throne before baseball's all-time stolen bases king displaced him, on September 25, 1985.

Presented is the home white pinstriped jersey worn by the legendary Rickey Henderson as he notched his seventy-fifth of what would prove to be a final season tally of eighty. By the time he left the Bronx, Henderson had elevated the Yankees record to ninety-three, a mark as safe as any in the sport.

The jersey's participation in Henderson's eternal coronation is trumpeted on the chest in the fleet-footed Hall of Famer's black sharpie, which reads, "This is the uniform I wore to break the Yankee season stolen base record in '85, Best Wishes, Rickey Henderson." While there is unfortunately no clear photography from that contest available online, we have matched the shirt to Getty Image #82408636, a Blue Jays visit to the Bronx eleven days earlier.

The jersey is one of the most unique pinstriped models you'll ever encounter, custom-hemmed and bearing a virtually unheard-of "Wilson [size] 41" label at interior lower left tail. The mourning band on the left sleeve honors legendary Yankees equipment manager Pete Sheehy, who passed away in August at age seventy-five. Interior collar bears embroidered "Henderson 85 2" swatch, and we see team repairs at the collar area to fix what we assume was Rickey's own intentional alteration to widen the neck, visible in the Getty photo referenced earlier. Number "24" is applied in deep navy tackle twill to verso. Marvelous game wear is evident throughout. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Photo match to 9/14/85 image. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
