Description

1982 Willie Stargell Game Worn Pittsburgh Pirates Jersey, MEARS A10. Yellow knit pullover is one of the very last jerseys worn in Major League play by this most beloved Steeltown superstar and first-ballot Hall of Fame immortal. This is the uniform style we see most clearly in our mind's eye when thinking of Pops, who reached the pinnacle of his international fame during the "We Are Family" World Championship season of 1979, winning the National League MVP, the NLCS MVP and the World Series MVP. Teammate Al Oliver once said, "If he asked us to jump off the Fort Pitt Bridge, we would ask him what kind of dive he wanted. That's how much respect we have for the man."

"Pirates 8" spans the chest in black on white tackle twill, with "Stargell 8" taking up residence on verso. Interior collar bears "Wilson [size] 48" label, reminding us what a broad-shouldered slugger this man had been. Lower left front tail holds embroidered swatch reporting, "8 82." The experts at MEARS characterize game use as "moderate," as to be expected for a season that saw Stargell make seventy-four appearances in a variety of uniform styles. LOA from MEARS, A10. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
