Description

1982 Willie Stargell Game Worn & Signed Pittsburgh Pirates Jersey, MEARS A9--Signed on Last Day of His Career. Stargell experts will immediately be drawn to the bold black sharpie inscription at lower left front reading, "To Jeff, Best Wishes, Willie Stargell, 3 Oct 82." It was on this date that the most beloved figure in Pirates history stepped to the plate for the final time, singling on a slow roller to lead off the bottom of the first inning before surrendering his position to a pinch runner and walking off the field forever.

Though Pops wore white for his 2,360th and final Major League appearance, the connection of this special gamer to that last day of a Hall of Fame career carries enormous collecting significance. Stargell was used almost exclusively as a pinch hitter in 1982, the forty-two year old legend making only eight appearances on defense and seventy-four on offense, so wear is appropriate for that workload.

"Pirates 8" is applied in that classic Pittsburgh format to chest, with "Stargell 8" on verso, the digit retired during a "Willie Stargell Day" event a month before this jersey was signed. Proper "Wilson [size] 48" label appears at interior collar, and "82" swatch is sewn to lower left front tail. LOA from MEARS, A9. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
