1981 Ryne Sandberg Rookie Spring Training Game Worn Philadelphia Phillies Jersey. The first Big League jersey ever worn by the Hall of Fame second baseman? Almost certainly. If it's not the first, it's the second, as we can't be sure whether Sandberg made his first Grapefruit League appearance in a home or road. But this classic powder blue knit was unquestionably worn by the Chicago Cubs legend during 1981 spring training with the Phillies, a team he would represent for the first thirteen games of his Major League career before being traded to the Cubs for his official rookie season in 1982.

While it's true that Sandberg wore number "37" for the Phillies during the regular season of 1981, we include a copy of the "1981 National League Green Book" which confirms that Sandberg sported number "24" for training. That's the number we encounter on front and back of the jersey, with the logo "P" and "Sandberg" nameplate joining each respectively. The surname is repeated upon an embroidered swatch at interior collar as well. Tail holds "Wilson [size] 42" label with "81 1" embroidered year swatch, establishing this most appealing of vintages. Zipper front remains operational, and the jersey exhibits the light wear you'd expect for limited spring training use. Autographed on verso in 10/10 black sharpie. This is the only Sandberg jersey we've ever encountered from his eye blink of Phillies service, and we expect the sophisticated uniform collector to chase this lot pretty aggressively. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (autograph). Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph). From the Roger Marth Collection.
