Description
1981 Dave Winfield Game Worn New York Yankees Jersey with Multiple Photo Matches, MEARS A9, and Cap. He was born the day Bobby Thomson hit his famous "Shot Heard 'round the World," and grew up to author 465 long balls of his own before entering the Baseball Hall of Fame on his first ballot in 2001. Presented is one of the first pinstriped jerseys worn by Winfield, whose ten-year $23 million contract made him the sport's highest-paid player. For the four seasons that followed, Winfield lived up to his lofty price tag as the most prolific run producer in the Majors.A removed black armband, worn to honor Yankee great Elston Howard who passed away in December of 1980, accounts for the sole point deducted in MEARS' glowing assessment, who reference Getty Image #121172730 as a definitive photo match. We can also report that Winfield wears this jersey on the 1981 Topps Traded card #855.
The classic "NY" logo is applied in navy tackle twill over the heart, with number "31" similarly applied to reverse. MEARS excuses the "Winfield 80 2" embroidered at interior collar as an anomaly--Winfield debuted in pinstripes in 1981--and certainly the multiple photo matches confirm it as such. Lower left front tail holds proper "Wilson [size] 44" label. MEARS assesses game use as "heavy" and "consistent."
Sourced with the jersey, a well-worn Yankees cap with a "New Era [size] 7 5/8" tag affixed to the sweat-stained interior headband. Number "31" appears in vintage marker under visor. LOA from MEARS, A9 (jersey). LOA from Heritage Auctions (jersey & cap).
