1979 Lou Brock Game Worn St. Louis Cardinals Jersey. Lou Brock's final career base theft, number 938, was also the one that gave him sole possession of the career steals record, topping 19th century legend "Sliding Billy" Hamilton's long standing mark of 937. While we certainly can make no guarantees of this jersey's association with that historic day, we can definitively state two facts. First, the game in which Brock stole number 938 was played on September 23, 1973 at the New York Mets' Shea Stadium, where the visiting Cardinals wore their blue roadsters. And secondly, the Baseball Hall of Fame website boasts of having Brock's spikes worn to break Ty Cobb's stolen base mark in 1977, but nothing from the 1979 Billy Hamilton-busting game. We'll leave the rest up to your imagination. Classic chenille birds and bat logo crosses the chest of this historic knit, with "Brock 20" in red and navy tackle twill on verso. The number is repeated in miniature on each sleeve. Inner tail offers "Rawlings" label with "Set 1 1979" flap tag affixed. Wear is light but definite. Small tobacco stain at upper right chest. Brock's custom-shortened tail is evident. It's interesting to note that this exact style of 1979 Lou Brock jersey is one of the more popular "throwback" jerseys marketed by sportswear manufacturer Mitchell & Ness. But, to quote the great Marvin Gaye, "Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby." Black sharpie signature on front rates 9+/10. LOA from MEARS, A10. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph). Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph).
