The top slugger in the National League gets paid...

1977 Mike Schmidt Game Worn Philadelphia Phillies Jersey--Photo Matched! After three seasons as the National League home run leader, Schmidt became the highest paid player in Major League history this year, his $561,500 salary ($2.3M in today's dollars) marking the first time a player rose above the half-million mark. The high-stakes gamble by Phillies general management would prove a wise investment, as the All-Star third baseman would club thirty-eight homers for his third season in a row, driving in 101 runs to help defend the team's National League East crown.

The offered garment finds Schmitty near the start of that impressive campaign, an April 22 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Schmidt would sacrifice home the only Phillies run in that contest. It's important to stress that the wonderful game wear is suggestive of extended use, so we have no doubt that a deeper dive into 1977 Phillies game footage would result in further matches.

The classic zipper-front style features a red tackle twill number "20" and logo "P" on the chest, giving way to "Schmidt 20" on verso. Lower left front tail provides proper "Wilson [size] 42" label above an embroidered swatch reporting size, season and set: "42 77 1." The 1995 Hall of Fame inductee's surname is similarly applied at interior collar. LOA from Resolution Photomatching. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
