1976 Ray Fosse Game Worn Cleveland Indians Jersey, MEARS A9.5.UPDATE: This listing includes a MEARS LOA and is graded A9.5.
If not for one single play, Ray Fosse may have been the finest catcher of his era. While we will never know if Cooperstown would come calling, the 1970 All-Star Game collision involving Pete Rose bowling over the upstart is talked about to this day. Fosse suffered a devastating shoulder injury, which didn't heal properly, and he was never the same afterwards.
On offer here is Fosse's all-original knit jersey from the American Bicentennial when he batted .301 for the tribe. "Indians" is arched across the chest with "Fosse 10" on the verso, all sewn on in white and red tackle twill. The v-neck and sleeves are adorned in stretchy red/white trim. Two gorgeous patches grace the sleeves, including a circular Indians logo patch and a "Cleveland Sports, Spirit of '76" patch. Tagging includes a "Wilson 44" in the collar with "76" stitched in blue on a white swatch in the tail.
This jersey is beautiful and shows the type of wear that collectors crave. The fabric is soft and the letters, numbers and patches are wonderfully soft and pliable from game wear and washing but do not experience any fraying. What's more, with knit jerseys and the 1970's increasing in favorability with collectors, this lot is something to consider. LOA from Heritage Auctions. LOA from MEARS, A9.5.
