1975 Willie McCovey Game Worn San Diego Padres Jersey. One of the more desirable 1970's knits in the hobby today, the Padres exemplar on offer here checks off many of the boxes which uniform collectors use to judge the importance and value of game worn jerseys. First, it was worn by a Hall of Famer (who was also the 1969 N.L. MVP and is a member of the 500 home run club). Second, it is one of the most beautiful and sought after uniform styles of the 1970's knits genre. Third, it shows wonderful game wear (although some of that is from minor league use).

The home white, seven button-down knit displays "Padres" scripted across the chest on an upward diagonal with "44" offset to the left and "44" on the verso, all of which are sewn-on in brown on gold tackle twill. Meanwhile, the collar and sleeve cuffs are adorned with matching gold/black trim. Tagging includes a "Wilson 44" label in the collar and a rectangular white fabric swatch in the tail with "44 75 44" in brown chainlink. Also, what appears to be a vintage dry cleaning tag is still affixed to the collar label by a safety pin.

While the back nameplate was removed (when the shirt was used in the minors) and the wear to the identifiers is excessive (with part of the "Padres" being disengaged from the knit fabric), the pluses far outweigh the negatives here and the display appeal has not been significantly compromised.
