Description
1973 Thurman Munson Game Worn New York Yankees Jersey & Pants--Photo Matched! He was the heart and soul of the New York Yankees during the 1970's, walking the same glorious and tragic path as Lou Gehrig before him, from team captaincy and World Championship glory to sudden and heartbreaking loss. While Munson would never follow the Iron Horse to Cooperstown, his pinstriped immortality is equally ensured through the retirement of his number "15" and eternal residence in Monument Park. Munson's game used material is the most desirable from that unforgettable decade of Yankees history. This ensemble is particularly significant due to its derivation from the 1973 season, the last in the "original" Yankee Stadium before two years of renovations dramatically reconfigured The House that Ruth Built, and the first in a three-season reign as the American League's Gold Glove catcher. We can still see the circular outline of the removed Yankee Stadium Golden Anniversary patch at the left sleeve. The classic logo "NY" over the heart is original and unaltered, but the number "15" on verso was stripped and replaced with "55" as it was issued to coach Ed Napoleon, whose son consigned this uniform to auction. A faded marker "Nap" appears at lower interior button path of the jersey and twice at interior waistband of the pants.
The attribution to Munson is assured by the original embroidered swatch at interior collar, and the outline of the original "15" on verso is still visible. Lower left front tail provides the proper for Munson "Wilson [size] 44" label, underscored by an embroidered "73" year swatch. The pants bear a "Wilson [size] 36" label below an embroidered swatch that reads, "Munson 15 73 22." Solid and consistent wear is evident throughout. The jersey has been matched to an undated photograph of Munson. Letter of provenance from son of Yankees coach. LOA from Resolution Photomatching. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
