The Ryan Express sets the single season strikeout record, records two no-hitters!

1973 Nolan Ryan Game Worn California Angels Jersey, MEARS A8. Perhaps the most remarkable fact about Nolan Ryan's thoroughly dominant 1973 season is that he did not win the Cy Young Award at the end. That honor went instead to fellow Hall of Famer Jim Palmer, who was brilliant with twenty-two victories and a 2.40 ERA, but feared far less by American League hitters than the fireballing Texan whose 383 strikeouts in 1973 remains the highest single-season Major League tally since Old Hoss Radbourn tossed 441 in 1884. Ryan would lead all Major Leaguers with 162 walks issued as well, leaving his fielders with little to do to pass the time.

Presented is a home white knit pullover jersey worn during that record-breaking campaign, one of just two (1973-74) that saw Ryan summit the twenty-win plateau. With the first two of his record seven no-hitters likewise coming during the 1973 season, historians widely consider that year to be Ryan's finest in twenty-seven tours of duty.

The jersey exhibits spectacular wear and remains in original and unaltered condition but for the standard removal of the name on back that preceded every Angels jersey's demotion to minor league usage after the season's end. This accounts for the sole deduction in the MEARS grading assessment. "Angels 30" is applied to the chest in red and navy tackle twill, those digits repeated in larger format on verso. The team logo patch remains affixed to left sleeve. Lower front interior tail holds the stacked "McAuliffe Uniform Corp." labeling with size "44" above and year "1973" below.

The important jersey derives from the personal collection of hobby icon Bert Padell, with his 2005 letter of provenance. LOA from MEARS, A8. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
