1972 Joe Morgan Spring Training Worn Cincinnati Reds Jersey--Morgan's First Reds Jersey! Extraordinary garment came to use doused in mystery, but a deep dive into our various research database revealed the elite significance of this home white flannel. Morgan was arguably the most important component of the Big Red Machine that won back-to-back World Championships in 1975 and 1976, each a National League MVP season for their superstar second baseman. But, if Morgan debuted in Cincinnati in 1972, why would his name and number appear on a 1971 Reds jersey?

The first inclination might be to conclude that the Reds simply reused a 1971 shell for the 1972 season, but the style is incorrect. In 1972, the team abandoned button-down flannels like this one for knit pullovers. But then we found Getty Image #517814506, which brought the true story of this special relic to light.

That image pictures third baseman Denis Menke sporting this style in 1972 spring training. Menke was part of the November 29, 1971 transaction between the Houston Astros and Reds that sent Morgan to Cincinnati, proving definitively that this 1971 model was used by all Reds, including new hires, in the 1972 Grapefruit League, a fact that establishes this as the very first garment from Morgan's Reds wardrobe.

The creamy-white beauty sports a red tackle twill number "8" and white chenille on red tackle twill team logo patch on the chest, with "Morgan 8" applied in red tackle twill to verso. Lower center interior tail holds "Rawlings [size] 40" label and washing instructions tag with "Set 1 #8P 1971" flap tag. Appropriately light wear from a month in the Sunshine State is evident, and chest is autographed in 9/10 black sharpie with "W/S Champs 75-76" notation. The very first example of a jersey that would become the third ever retired by the Reds franchise! LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph).
