    Description

1972 Gaylord Perry Cy Young Award Season Game Worn Cleveland Indians Jersey. Uniform experts will immediately balk at this lot title, noting that this unique font first appeared on the Tribe's uniforms in 1973, but close inspection reveals the stitching outline of the more pedestrian "Indians" font beneath, a one-season style that assures Cy Young season vintage. We must also report that the "Perry 36" on verso is likewise gone but still visible in a stitching "ghost," a number "17" having taken its place. Both of these alterations are team-issued. Despite these changes, the garment must still be considered a collecting treasure, deriving from a season that saw Perry top all American Leaguers with twenty-four victories and twenty-nine complete games to claim Major League pitching's highest individual honor. Solid use is evident, though certainly a degree of this relates to secondary wear. Collar is custom cut at the bottom, a perfect match to Perry's 1973 Topps card #346. "Wilson [size] 46" label at interior collar is partially loose. Our consignor did confirm with Perry that he did such a customization. Blue sharpie signature on chest rates 9/10. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
