    Description

1971 Willie McCovey Game Worn San Francisco Giants Jersey. We'll start with an acknowledgement that the Hall of Fame outfielder and 500 Home Run Club member sported double fours on his jersey whereas this shirt is a digit higher, but the stitching path of the previous number "4" is still clearly visible under the present "5." This team-instituted change is the only alteration to what is otherwise a flawless representation of a tough Hall of Fame flannel, worn during a season in which Big Mac earned his sixth and final All-Star Game appearance. "San Francisco" appears in original black and orange tackle twill on chest, as does the first number "4" on verso. Number "5" is a newer addition, surely precipitated by Dave Kingman's assumption of McCovey's position when the Hall of Famer was lost to injury. The interior collar still holds the attribution to "McCovey" in the form of an embroidered felt swatch, similar to the "1971" swatch at lower left front tail, just below the "Wilson [size] 44" label. Solid wear. A terrific Hall of Fame gamer serving double duty as a Dave Kingman rookie shirt! LOA from Heritage Auctions.
