    Description

1971 Ray Fosse Game Worn Cleveland Indians Jersey - One Year Style. If not for one single play, Ray Fosse may have been the finest catcher of his era. While we will never know if Cooperstown would come calling, the 1970 All-Star Game collision involving Pete Rose bowling over the upstart is talked about to this day. Fosse suffered a devastating shoulder injury, which didn't heal properly, and was a shell of his former self. Even after the injury, Fosse made the 1971 Mid-Summer Classic - the same year he wore this road flannel jersey. While this one-year style doesn't have the flair of the 3-D tops worn in 1970, it is a tough find. Our consignor purchased this directly from the Indians in 1977 at a team sale. The all-original flannel has "Cleveland" spelled across the front and "8" on reverse in midnight navy. The left sleeve is decorated with a Chief Wahoo team emblem. Applied in the tail are three labels: "71" (year), "Spalding Professional" and "[size] 44." Fosse signed the front in black marker. Oh what might have been had Rose not toppled over the young backstop. Just another one of baseball's mysteries. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
