    Description

1970 Jim "Catfish" Hunter Game Worn Oakland A's Jersey. When Hall of Famer Jim "Catfish" Hunter signed a contract with the New York Yankees for $4.75 million on December 31, 1974, it was the first time since the 1870's that a Major League player was free to offer his services to the highest bidder. Baseball's first free agent and the 1974 A.L. Cy Young Award winner was also a five-time twenty-game winner and a five-time World Series champion with the A's and Yankees.

Presented here is Hunter's 1970 Oakland A's cream-colored, home vest with "A's" over the left chest, "27" on the right chest (but lower than "A's"), and "27" on the verso, all in double sewn-on green and gold tackle twill letters and numbers. There is also tremendous gold/green/gold trim around the neckline and arm openings and the shirt exhibits the finest of game wear. Tagging in the tail includes "McAuliffe," "70," and "46."

There is a team repair on the verso with "Voennel" markered on the inside button path, both probably the result of training camp or post-1970 minor league use. Also, the name on the back has been removed with outline remnants and minor material degradation. However, this should not diminish the importance and desirability of the jersey because it was part of the natural life cycle of jerseys of the time to have their names removed after the season. Regardless, Catfish Hunter was baseball's first free agent and one of the most feared pitchers of his time. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
