From the season he joined the 500 Home Run Club...
1970 Ernie Banks Game Worn Chicago Cubs Jersey, MEARS A10.UPDATE: This jersey was sourced from Banks directly, with his signed letter of provenance.
Born the second of a dozen children to Eddie and Essie Banks in the segregated South, Banks attended high school less than a mile from the Heritage Auctions world headquarters in Dallas, where he lettered in basketball, football and track. He was coaxed into the sport of baseball by his father, who bought him his first glove for three dollars at a local shop and bribed his reluctant son to practice with nickels and dimes.
But by the time the young Texan had made his way to the Majors, debuting with the 1953 Chicago Cubs, Banks' affection for our national pastime was profound, and he'd quickly earn the nickname "Mr. Cub" for his infectious "Let's play two!" exuberance. Despite ownership of the career record for most games played without a postseason appearance (2,538), Banks never regretted his allegiance to the hapless Cubs and remains arguably the most beloved figure ever to call Wrigley home.
The provided grey flannel garment found Banks near the end of his storied career, a season best remembered for his May 20, 1970 long ball that earned Banks the ninth key to the 500 Home Run Clubhouse. This three-season Cubs road style was the last of the flannel era, as the Cubbies would trot this look out one last time for Banks' farewell season of 1971 before transitioning to knits. Blue tackle twill announces "Chicago" in arching block across the chest, with Banks' retired number "14" taking up residence below on front, and in larger format on verso. Team logo patch remains affixed at left sleeve. Interior collar holds embroidered swatch reporting jersey number, year, set number and size: "14-70-1-40." Lower left front tail holds "Wilson [size] 40" label below an embroidered "1970."
Jersey is personalized and signed at upper left chest in 9/10 black sharpie and exhibits solid game wear but none of the staining or fabric damage common to vintage flannel. It's a relic as worthy of the Hall of Fame as the man who wore it, a stellar representation well-deserving of its elite professional assessment. LOA from MEARS, A10. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph). Full LOA from SGC Authentic (autograph).
