    Description

1970 Dick Howser Game Worn New York Yankees Coach's Jersey. Almost all of the men hired, and eventually fired, by George Steinbrenner had a love/hate relationship with The Boss. Dick Howser's story was probably the strangest. In 1980, Howser became only the fourth skipper to reach 100 wins in his first year as manager. Steinbrenner rewarded Howser by firing him when he refused to dump his third base coach for a mistake in the ALCS. Howser eventually settled in with the Kansas City Royals and led the team to its first World Series title. Howser wore this " Wilson size 40" flannel when he was a coach for the Yankees. The jersey is in its original state and was donated by the Yankees to a local youth baseball team in the 1970's. "New York" is expressed across the front while "34" is formed on back in single-color Yankee blue. A swatch in the collar reads "Howser 70-40" and the tail has a single Wilson label. Letter of provenance from consignor. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
