Description
1969 Willie McCovey Game Worn & Signed San Francisco Giants Jersey--MVP Season!UPDATE: This jersey has been graded by MEARS, A10.
If it were slugging rather than batting average that mattered, Stretch would have claimed the Triple Crown this year, his forty-five home runs and 126 runs batted in marking the second consecutive season he'd top all Senior Circuit denizens in those power metrics. While that offensive heat had earned him only a third-place finish in 1968, the lanky outfielder would narrowly edge out World Champion Mets ace Tom Seaver in 1969 MVP voting, establishing the offered garment as one of the most desirable McCovey representations ever to tempt a bidding audience.
The classic design features black and orange identifiers on road grey flannel, announcing "San Francisco" in 2.75" block and chest and the immortal double-fours on verso that, with the help of Hank Aaron and Reggie Jackson, have become synonymous with fence-clearing power. One of the greatest Major League Baseball sleeve patches ever designed, the centennial model, remains affixed at left sleeve in its original application.
For reasons that are unclear, Giants jerseys from the '69 season appear with three different manufacturer's labels, and this is the "W.A. Goodman & Sons" format, bearing a bold embroidered swatch beneath that lower left front tail tagging that trumpets, "McCovey, 44 / 2 1/2, 1969." Those two and a half inches of extra length are clearly apparent in the long, slim shape of the garment, and we likewise find the stubby sleeves which McCovey favored. The tackle twill and tagging exhibit the supple feel of sweaty wear and multiple launderings, suggesting a productive shared experience with the jersey's owner. A bold black sharpie signature, underscored with a "1969 'Gamer'" notation, serves as the perfect cherry on top. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from SGC Authentic.
