1969 Rod Carew Game Worn Minnesota Twins Jersey. "I taught him how to steal home," once noted Billy Martin, who served as the Twins' skipper during the 1969 season that the presented jersey saw action. "That's all I ever taught him. As for hitting, he knew how to do that all by himself." Arguably one of the most underrated players occupying a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame, Carew played Ty Cobb's game long after the attentions of the baseball world had turned to the Babe Ruth model, trading power for placement and brawn for blazing speed. Seven times Carew claimed the American League batting title, the first being the season he wore this road grey flannel, the third year of his service to Minnesota. The jersey exhibits marvelous wear from that breakthrough season for the Panamanian superstar, particularly evident in the puckering of the tackle twill identifiers and the softness of the tagging at lower left front tail. "Twins" is scripted across the chest in navy and red, with Carew's retired number "29" applied to verso. The all-important Baseball Centennial patch worn by all 1969 ballclubs remains affixed at left sleeve, balanced by a team logo patch on right. Above the "Spalding" size "40" tagging, the text "Carew 29, 40, 69" is embroidered directly into the jersey body in navy thread, while below a Dry Cleaning label sprouts a "Set 1 1969" flap tag. The picture-perfect representation is completed by a 10/10 black sharpie inscription from Carew at upper left shoulder, reading "Best Wishes, Rod Carew, My 1st Batting Title 1969, .332."
Game worn flannels from members of the illustrious 3,000 Hit Club seldom surface on the auction circuit, and any opportunity to improve one's personal portfolio with a flawless example such as this must be taken seriously. And for the old-school baseball purist, who finds more delight in a double stretched to a triple than a long ball and a slow jog, there is no more fitting relic than a game worn jersey from Rod Carew's first great season in the Majors. Jersey is graded MEARS A8, with one point lost for two missing buttons, and another for the absence of the embroidered "Carew" swatch at interior collar. LOA from MEARS. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph). Full LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph).
