Description
1969 Bill Mazeroski Game Worn Pittsburgh Pirates Jersey, MEARS A9. Though the Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman will always be remembered best for his Game Seven, ninth inning walk-off home run to snatch the 1960 World Series from the dominant New York Yankees, the path to Maz' Hall of Fame induction was paved with leather, not lumber. The eight-time Gold Glover is still considered one of the greatest middle infielders of all time, blessed with enormous range and a sharpshooter's rifle of an arm. This classic Steeltown vest style features black and gold felt on road grey flannel, the former reporting "Pirates 9" on front and a lone number "9" on reverse. Black and gold soutache rings the collar and sleeve holes. All seven "mother-of-pearl-style" buttons are original. "Rawlings 42," washing instructions label, and "Set 1 1969" flap tag in the left tail further validate this Hall of Famers' vintage flannel.
This lot also includes Mazeroski's game worn, team issued, wool-blend undershirt with gray/cream body and team-colored, three-quarter sleeve length arms in Pirates black. It is tagged in the collar with a "Duofold 44" and "Rawlings 44" labels. On the reverse side of the tagging sits "Maz' number "9" in vintage black marker.
Solid game wear is evident on both specimens, with some soiling on the obverse and slight fabric loss on the soutache of the jersey, accounting for the one-point deduction in the MEARS assessment. Both garments remain in 100% original and unaltered condition. A picture-perfect ensemble from this beloved Pirate immortal. Letter of provenance from Bill Mazeroski. LOA from MEARS, A9. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
