    Description

1967 Al Schmelz Game Worn New York Mets Jersey. This button-down road gray flannel with blue piping is one of the most beautiful baseball uniform designs ever conceived. The "New York" text in Tiffany lettering is radially arched across the chest in blue felt atop orange tackle twill. Michael Hagemann's decorative font was inspired by the Jack Daniels Green Label Whiskey logo as well as the 1950's Giants. The blue and orange colors, meanwhile, are a nod to the 50's Dodgers and Giants, respectively.

Number "44" appears both offset left on the front and on the verso, all in blue and orange tackle twill. Ray Gotto's timeless skyline logo patch sits on the left sleeve and features the original "NY" monogram (since departed) as well as actual Manhattan and Brooklyn landmarks such as the Empire State Building, Woolworth Building, United Nations, and Williamsburg Savings Bank. "44-67- Set 2" in delightfully preserved on a flannel swatch in the collar as is the "Wilson 40" tag in the tail. The jersey has wonderful even wear, albeit primarily from when it was sent down to the minors, as Schmelz' entire Major League career consisted of just three innings. Numbers and patch were all replaced by the team (In fact, Mets twill-on-twill numbers in final years of flannel). The garment stands as a witness to the evolution of New York baseball uniforms and would make a tremendous display piece. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
