    Description

1966-69 Bobby Murcer Game Worn New York Yankees Rookie Jersey. As "rookie" as rookie gets! The presented road grey jersey was first issued to the kid rumored to be the next Mickey Mantle in 1966, a year spent mainly in the minors but including twenty-one games with the Big League club, when Murcer hit just .174. Just twenty years old and apparently not quite ready for The Show, Murcer was sent back down to the minors until the 1969 season when he became a full time member of the New York Yankees for his "official" rookie season.

Note the number "17" swatch inside the collar. That's the number the young star in the making sported for the 1966 season, and the stitching outline of those digits is still apparent on jersey verso. But when Murcer reappeared for the 1969 season, equipment manager Pete Sheehy reissued his old shirt with a change to the familiar number "1" digit, which remains on the jersey to this day. Properly, a Baseball Centennial patch was added to the left sleeve as well. The block lettered "New York" across the chest remains unaltered. "MacGregor size 42" label remains affixed at interior collar, with a second "MacGregor" tag indicating "Set 1 1966" at the bottom of the internal button path, just above a washing instructions label. Some tearing at the bottom of the lower right tail is not particularly distracting, and the jersey otherwise exhibits fine wear but no damage to note. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
