Description

1964 Willie Stargell Game Worn & Signed Pittsburgh Pirates Jersey, MEARS A7.5.

UPDATE: A full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph) will accompany this lot.

"When I played, there were 600 baseball players, and 599 of them loved Willie Stargell," fellow Hall of Famer Joe Morgan explained. "He's the only guy I could have said that about. He never made anybody look bad and he never said anything bad about anybody." Like Roberto Clemente, with whom Pops shared half of his two-decade Pirates career, Stargell brought far more than world-class skills to the ballpark, reveling in the opportunities afforded by fame to effect positive change both on and off the Major League diamond.

This ultra-rare early flannel vest dates to Pops' second full season in the Bigs, a season he first crested the .500 mark in slugging, thereby earning his first of seven career All-Star nods. The jersey exhibits strong wear from 117 appearances, and presents wonderfully despite some loss of the fragile trim at collar and arm holes, and a button.

Lower left front tail bears proper "Rawlings [size] 44" label, recalling the slimmer physique Pops sported at age twenty-four. Interior tail holds washing instructions label anchoring a "Set 1 1964" flap tag. Interior collar is autographed in 8/10 blue sharpie. LOA from MEARS, A7.5. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
