1964 Hank Aaron Game Worn Milwaukee Braves Jersey. The second decade of one of the greatest careers in American sports begins. Though seventeen seasons had passed since the brave Jackie Robinson opened the Major League door for African-Americans, the nation was not yet equal under the law the first time Hammerin' Hank sported this road grey flannel, a few months short of President Lyndon B. Johnson's brave signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 officially ending Jim Crow. The official act did little to quell the virulent racism that gripped the nation, however, and Aaron would continue to fight it throughout the entirety of his career, particularly as he neared Ruth's fabled mark a decade later. Still, this 1964 vintage adds enormous appeal to any jersey worn by a black ballplayer, and particularly to one owned by Aaron.The road grey gamer was a particularly unwelcome sight to fans supporting their white-shirted home team in 1964, as Aaron was coming off the greatest campaign of his career, just seven batting average points shy of the 1963 Triple Crown. Aaron's feared double-fours appear on the chest in red and navy tackle twill on the chest below the classic scripted "Braves" logo, and again in larger format on verso. It must be noted that the nameplate on reverse was removed by the team, a common practice for Big League gamers as they were reassigned to secondary usage in the minors. This removal represents the only alteration from the jersey's original appearance. MEARS deducts a point for the missing nameplate, and another half for minor stitching separation at the top of the screaming Indian patch on the left sleeve, accounting for the A8.5 final grade. The embroidered "Aaron 1964 44" swatch remains solidly affixed at interior collar, and the proper "Rawlings [size] 42" label likewise remains at lower left front tail.
MEARS conservatively characterizes the game wear as moderate, and it survives today with no tears, stains or other distracting flaws. And as a tribute to one of the game's great racial pioneers, a 1964 Aaron gamer finds few equals. LOA from MEARS, A8.5.
