Description

1964 Bob Gibson Game Worn Jersey. Before Dusty Baker faced Bob Gibson for the first time, teammate Hank Aaron warned him, "Don't dig in against him, he'll knock you down. He'd knock down his own grandmother if she dared to challenge him. Don't stare at him, don't smile at him, don't talk to him. He doesn't like it. If you happen to hit a home run, don't run too slow, don't run too fast. If you happen to want to celebrate, get in the tunnel first. And if he hits you, don't charge the mound, because he's a Gold Glove boxer." The most intimidating pitcher of his era, Gibson was likewise one of the most effective, claiming a pair of Cy Young Awards to match a pair of World Championship rings during his Hall of Fame career.

Presented is a home white flannel dating to the year of Gibson's first World Championship, one for which he was awarded the World Series MVP for notching two of the four wins needed to dispose of the mighty Yankees. While it's possible that this jersey saw action during that fabled October, there's no doubt but that the shirt saw season-long wear leading up to the Fall Classic. Despite the strong wear, the jersey has no damage or significant flaws, save the removal of the name on back, an outline of which is still quite discernible when held up to the light. This was a common practice for Cardinals jerseys, as most were used in spring training the following season. As such, the absence of "Gibson" on verso should not be seen as particularly problematic.

All other identifiers are present and unaltered, including the chenille birds and bat logo on the chest and the number "45" affixed to front and verso in red and navy felt. The proper "Rawlings [size] 42" label remains affixed at lower left front exterior tail, while interior tail holds washing instructions label with "Set 1 1964" flap tag at right. A 9+/10 black sharpie signature from Gibson completes the package. LOA from Lou Lampson. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph).

I received the catalog and was very impressed with its color illustrations, descriptions and attractive layout. (It has better production values than the New York houses.)
