    The Mick keeps warm...

1964-67 Mickey Mantle Game Worn New York Yankees Jacket, MEARS Authentic.

UPDATE: The consignor has located and delivered to us a 1992 letter of provenance from Gene Monahan, former head trainer of the Yankees.

We would never attempt to suggest that there is any game worn garment quite as desirable as the jersey, but in collectibles, as in life, everything is a matter of perspective. In the fifteen years since Heritage Auctions began its sports collectibles division, we've seen an absolute pricing explosion for those Mantle gamers, our most recent sale (just a year ago) drawing a winning bid of $1.32 million.

Clearly that is a price too rich for all but the most well-funded blood, forcing mere mortals like us to seek out other options to provide our Mantle fix. Presented is just such an option.

It's evident that non-jersey uniform pieces--caps, pants, shoes, undershirts--have not followed a parallel route to the steep pricing incline of that rare flannel, and we suspect a correction is likely forthcoming. Does it make logical sense that a jacket is sold for just one or two percent the price of a jersey?

That's a question you'll need to answer for yourself as you compete for this gorgeous garment from the Mick's later years of Bronx service. We'd remind potential bidders that this jacket may have seen wear during Mantle's final World Series in 1964, and perhaps the day of his 500th home run in 1967. Check video of Mickey's return to the dugout after that milestone blast and you'll find his teammates wearing this exact style.

It features the classic "NY" logo in white tackle twill over the heart and a "bat and hat" team logo patch at left sleeve. Interior collar bears an ancient, faded number "7" in black marker, and we can barely make out the letter "M" on the original identification label at interior lower left tail, beside the proper "MacGregor Size 46" label. An included letter of opinion from MEARS assures that every detail is correct for the iconic Yankee. Solid wear evident. LOA from MEARS, Authentic. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
