Description
Earliest known Gibson gamer to appear in a major auction
1963 Bob Gibson Game Worn St. Louis Cardinals Jersey. It would take a Cy Young and MVP-winning performance in 1968 to improve upon the results recorded by Gibson the season he sported this road grey flannel, the Hall of Fame hurler recovering from a 1962 ankle injury to go eighteen and nine (18-9) in 1963 for an impressive winning percentage of .667. Though the red birds would finish six games down in the pennant race to a red-hot Dodgers team, World Championship realization was just around the corner for St. Louis, who would enjoy Fall Classic victory in 1964.Here we present a thrilling memento of that prelude to glory, a garment exhibiting rock-solid wear from the most feared right-hander in post-war baseball history. The timeless design should be familiar to all, the classic birds and bat logo applied in gorgeous chenille to the chest above a red and navy felt number "45." Those digits are repeated in larger format on reverse beneath a gently arching "Gibson" in proper 2.75" block lettering. We note that the name has been restored--a modern replacement after the original was stripped for standard secondary farm club use--accounting for a two-point deduction in the MEARS assessment.
Some minimal seam separation to the numerals on front and back are only apparent upon close inspection and certainly have no detrimental effect to display. This issue, and the replacement of all the original buttons, account for the other two points deducted by MEARS. Lower left tail is tagged with the proper "Rawlings [size] 42" manufacturer's label above "Gibson 63" embroidered directly into the body. Lower left interior tail holds a "Set 1 1963" flap anchored to the right edge of a washing instructions label. A 9/10 black sharpie signature at lower right exterior tail completes the aesthetic review.
More than five years have elapsed since a playing-days Gibson jersey was sold within a major sports auction, solid evidence of the scarcity of available representations. No earlier model has ever surfaced in that forum. Honored by jersey retirement in 1975 and Cooperstown in 1981, Gibson earned perhaps his greatest compliment in 1999 when he was ranked number thirty-one on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players in history. LOA from MEARS, A6. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
