    Description

1963-64 Pete Rose Game Worn Cincinnati Reds Rookie-Era Jersey, MEARS A9. There was no more popular player on the Reds roster in 1964 than the twenty-three year old second baseman, who attended high school just five miles from Crosley Field and earned the National League Rookie of the Year Award for his debut season contributions. Despite Charlie Hustle's blue sharpie notation, we report that this pinstriped flannel is a second-year model, worn not as Rose earned the Rookie of the Year trophy, but rather as he accepted it. A modern photographic print of the presentation ceremony is included in the lot, clearly showing the slightly off-kilter application of the number "14" on the chest and the precise intersection of pinstripes to those digits, the chenille Reds logo over the heart, and the button path down the center.

The number "14" remains on verso, but only the clear outline of the tackle twill "Rose" that once resided below remains, proper in size and unusual format as worn by the emerging Hit King. Wear is solid and consistent, as one would expect for the hardest working man in professional baseball. Interior collar holds the manufacturer's tagging, the proper "MacGregor Size 44." Inside the garment we find the 1963 year tagging that led to Rose's attribution, but the detailed letter from uniform experts MEARS reports that this was simply an extra 1963 shell that was put to use in 1964.

MEARS characterizes game wear as "moderate," bearing witness to a season that saw Charlie Hustle build his career hit tally to 309. As one of the earliest known relics from the career of the reigning Hit King, and with ironclad photo documentation to boot, this ranks among the most significant game used articles to tempt the advanced collector in recent years.
