Description
The aging veteran proves the doubters wrong with a brilliant penultimate campaign!
1962 Stan Musial Game Worn & Signed St. Louis Cardinals Jersey,
MEARS A10. Everybody loves a comeback, particularly when it's
as unexpected as was Stan Musial's 1962 campaign. The evidence
pointing to the Man's decline had been three years in the making,
as the legendary slugger had failed to hit .300 since the 1958
season. Few suspected that Father Time would relinquish his cruel
grip before Musial hung up his spikes. But the forty-one year old
Cardinals legend worked out diligently through the winter, coming
into spring training four pounds lighter. "And believe me," he
later recounted, "those four pounds make a difference."His hot March continued into the regular season, as Musial went three-for-three with a double on Opening Day, two-for-four in game two, and then shocked the baseball world with both a home run and a steal--his first base theft in two years--in the third contest. "The Cubs, feeling that old guy won't be going any place, patently ignored him and he was off and running," joyfully reported The Sporting News. As late as August 9th, Musial led the Senior Circuit with a staggering .354 average, ultimately cooling to a more-than-respectable .330 average to conclude the season, good enough for third place in the category as well as his fourteenth and final top ten showing in National League MVP voting.
Presented is a home white flannel worn during the Busch Stadium portion of that final great season of Musial's Hall of Fame career, widely considered one of the most impressive ever registered by a player north of forty. The classic chenille birds and bat logo dominates the obverse, with the retired number "6" applied to front and verso in red and navy felt. Arching across the shoulders is a block lettered "Musial." Lower left front tail bears "Rawlings 44" label and "Musial 62" embroidered directly into the jersey body. Interior tail holds washing instructions label and "Set 1 1962" flap tag. Furthermore, the condition is impeccable and the front is signed in 8/10 black sharpie.
If there has ever been an auction offering that bolsters the validity of Musial's famous nickname, this is that piece. God-given ability can take you far--just ask Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle--but the durability and dedication of folks like Gehrig and Musial particularly deserve our respect and admiration. An inspirational piece worthy of the finest of private uniform collections. LOA from MEARS A10. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services.
