1962 Charley Neal Game Worn New York Mets Jersey - Inaugural Season. Let's forget the 120 losses. That doesn't matter. Let's forget manager Casey Stengel's plaintive cry, "Can't anybody here play this game?!" That's ancient history. All great journeys begin with a single step, and the 1962 season was just that for a team which now commands the undying devotion of millions of fans throughout the five boroughs of New York City and beyond. Today the team which is remembered as perhaps the absolute worst in baseball history is likewise one of the game's most collectible, and this is unquestionably one of the most exciting pieces deriving from that painful infancy ever to appear on the public auction block.

The presented road grey flannel announced the return of National League baseball to the Big Apple after a five year absence, worn by a talented middle infielder who had come up with the 1956 Brooklyn Dodgers and followed the team west during the great exodus of 1958. "New York" arches across the chest in an Old English style reminiscent of the old New York Giants aesthetic, with number "4" applied to verso in the same blue and orange felt. The newly designed and still unchanged team logo patch is applied to left sleeve. Embroidered grey felt swatch affixed at interior collar supplies the jersey number and delectable vintage: "4-1962." Lower left exterior tail provides proper "Wilson size 40" label. Solid wear is evident throughout, with a small unrepaired hole on back. Some color transfer from the orange lettering to the grey flannel is apparent upon close inspection, but does not distract the eye. A thrilling find, not just for the devout Mets fan, but for true baseball enthusiasts in general. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
