1961 Portland Beavers Game Worn Jersey Attributed to Satchel Paige. Fifty-five years old when he was signed to the Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League for the final five games of the 1961 season, the great Satchel Paige proved yet again that age is just a number, striking out nineteen batters in twenty-five innings of work while posting an earned run average of just 2.88. Though the Negro League legend would register three scoreless innings for the 1965 Kansas City Athletics and make one final two-inning appearance with the Carolina League's Peninsula Grays the following year, the Beavers represent the last team for which Paige pitched more than a single game, and in a uniform that wasn't borrowed for the occasion.

While it is impossible, due to lack of any stitched or handwritten attribution in the shirt, to peg it to Paige with 100% certitude, we have confirmed the following facts. 1) This is the style of jersey utilized by the Beavers in 1961. 2) Paige did wear number "8" as a member of the 1961 Beavers. 3) Paige did pitch on the road for the Beavers, when they would have worn their grey uniforms. 4) Size 42 jersey is correct for Paige.

Speaking to the specifics of the jersey itself, the "Portland" on the chest and number "8" on verso are constructed of midnight navy felt, matching the trim that runs the length of the button path and collar, and rings the cuffs. "Wilson [size] 42" label appears at lower left front tail. Solid wear is evident throughout, though we must stipulate this is not all attributable to Paige. Our consignor notes that catcher Gordy McKensie wore the jersey in 1962, and the friction from his vest is clearly evident in the wear to the trim at the shoulders. But much like the great Satchel Paige himself, this gorgeous and important relic hasn't lost a step. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
