1960 Mickey Mantle Game Worn & Signed New York Yankees Jersey,
MEARS/Grob A9.5 -- Multiple Photo Matches Including 1960 All-Star
Game. Though Bill Mazeroski's legendary walk-off home run
brought a painful end to the 1960 Yankees season, it nonetheless
stands among the finest in the personal history of the franchise's
top post-war superstar. He'd finish second to teammate Roger Maris
in American League MVP balloting, earning ten first-place votes to
Rajah's eight but coming up three points short of the composite
winning tally of 225. However the bold ink of the Mick's Junior
Circuit supremacy endures across a number of other 1960 statistics,
notably home runs (40), runs scored (119), total bases (294) and
OPS (.957). Two All-Star Games were played in 1960, and Mantle
started as center fielder in both, batting clean-up.This spectacular home white pinstriped jersey is extensively photo matched by MeiGray and Sports Investors (SIA), with both firms confirming its earliest appearance in the chronology of six dated photo matches in the first of those two 1960 Midsummer Classics, played on July 11th at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City. Mantle would walk twice before the entire team was subbed out in the top of the sixth, with Al Kaline taking over in center. The other dated matches are as follows:
8/16/60 victory over Baltimore Orioles (1-0). Hitless with four putouts.
8/27/60 victory over Cleveland Indians (7-4). 1-for-3 with a double and run scored. One putout.
8/28/60 loss to Detroit Tigers (2-6). 1-for-5 with one RBI.
3/27/61 exhibition game vs. Kansas City Athletics.
Further photo matches include two undated photos at Yankee Stadium, two undated photos of Mantle with Roger Maris, and four undated photos likely taken during 1961 spring training. There are also five apparent matches, listed in the detailed Sports Investors Authentication documentation visible at our online listing.
Since the legendary Commerce Comet last donned this jersey, it has had an extremely small chain of custody. The museum-caliber artifact was acquired in the 1990's by our consignor from the estate of one of Mantle's former Yankees teammates, and has been quietly kept out of the collecting public's consciousness for nearly three decades. The family has insisted upon anonymity, so we cannot reveal the teammate's identity.
As the stellar MEARS grade would suggest, this jersey remains in 100% original and unaltered condition, the lone half-point deduction relating to broken stitching at the top of the "Mantle" embroidered swatch at interior collar, which remains firmly affixed on the other three sides of the rectangle. The classic deep navy "NY" over the heart and iconic number "7" on verso haven't lost a single stitch, and the pinstriped white flannel, while demonstrating game wear characterized as "moderate" by the experts at MEARS, exudes a delectable vanilla creaminess without a blemish or moth hole to undermine its exquisite beauty. It may be the most physically gorgeous Mantle jersey in the hobby.
Lower left front tail holds a "Spalding" label with the same edge wear you'll find on just about every game used jersey from that manufacturer, a "44" size tag anchored at right. The "60" year identifier is embroidered directly into the jersey body below. Flip the tail over to find a washing instructions label anchoring a "Set 1 1960" flap tag. A black sharpie signature, underscored by a desirable "No. 7" notation, adorns upper right chest with 8/10 boldness. LOA from MEARS/Grob, A9.5. Photo match LOA from Sports Investors Authentication. Photo match LOA from MeiGray. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services.

Best-In-Class Expert Analysis/Summary:
In the world of vintage baseball flannels, while all of them are considered scarce since they were deployed so infrequently to begin with, some jerseys are simply more difficult to find than others. That chore is taken to an entirely different level when it comes to New York Yankee home pinstripe jerseys and all-original specimens, considering the common practice of repurposing the jerseys for minor league use. This tradition, of course, leads to all kinds of potential alterations, from number changes on the back to logo/team modifications on the front to patch removals on the sleeves.
As a result, finding a classic pinstripe in that state of preservation is both extremely challenging and highly coveted. When it comes to Mickey Mantle, the level of demand is overwhelming versus the scant number of jerseys that make the grade. This gorgeous example, which the baseball icon signed and inscribed along the chest, was issued during the 1960 season. Furthermore, and perhaps more importantly, the jersey has been photo-matched to over a dozen images, including one that places the jersey at the Midsummer Classic that year.
This jersey was worn during Mantle's prime, as it is nestled in the middle of his three AL MVPs (1956, 1957, and 1962). In fact, Mantle was the runner-up in 1960 after leading the league in various categories, including runs scored (119), home runs (40), and OPS (.957). This period was Mantle at the height of his powers. The powerhouse team made what seemed like their annual trip to the World Series in 1960. While they fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates in seven games, Mantle was the anchor of a squad that made 12 World Series appearances and took home seven championships from 1951 to 1964.
This jersey is exceptional within the realm of known Mantle pinstripes. Its combination of original state, outstanding condition, immense eye appeal, definitive photo matches, and era of use results in what hobbyists refer to as "checking all the right boxes." Due to its exceptional overall attributes, this spectacular relic received our Best-In-Class assessment.
