Description

1958 Willie Mays Game Worn San Francisco Giants Jersey, MEARS A7.5. As two-thirds of Big Apple baseball fans wept, the state of California rejoiced in 1958 when the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers put the width of a continent between themselves and their ancestral home, fulfilling the inevitability of Major League Baseball's Manifest Destiny. Presented is one of the most significant artifacts of that reconfiguration, a jersey worn during the first season of the relocation by the most talented ballplayer to make the long journey. Mays would demonstrate no signs of homesickness during his debut west coast campaign, leading the National League in runs (121) and stolen bases (31), and coming up just a single home run short of turning the 30/30 Club into a duo along with the little-remembered Ken Williams of the 1922 St. Louis Browns. Mays was also in contention for the National League batting title until the final game of the 1958 season, ultimately finishing second to fellow Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn at a career-best .347.

Only the "San Francisco" across the chest of this important grey flannel garment is not original to the jersey--a two-point MEARS deduction--but it's important to note that the lettering is from the period, harvested from a different Giants roadster and expertly applied. The fabled number "24" on verso is the same Mays sported at the seven other National League parks, as is the embroidered "Mays" swatch in the collar and the "MacGregor Size 42" label just above. The historic vintage is confirmed by a "Set 2 1958" swatch at interior seam.

Game wear is strong, with a team repair at right shoulder, general piping wear and some bleaching of the rear numerals that accounts for the other half-point lost in MEARS grading. LOA from MEARS, A7.5. LOA from Heritage Auctions. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
