1958 Elston Howard Game Worn New York Yankees Jersey. Better late than never, as they say. Despite the New York Yankees' firmly established dedication to winning, the team was woefully overdue in integrating its roster, eight years behind the Brooklyn Dodgers' pace when they introduced Elston Howard on April 14, 1955. Presented is a rare home gamer from the pinstriped pioneer's fourth season of distinguished service to the Bronx Bombers, one in which he played the role of October hero in the Yanks' unlikely World Series rematch victory. Down three games to one and facing Game Five elimination, Howard caught a sinking fly ball in the sixth inning and then doubled Bill Bruton off first base for a double play, preserving a one to nothing lead. In Game Six, Howard threw out Andy Pafko at the plate in the second inning and scored the decisive run in the tenth, then drove in the winning run in the eighth inning of Game Seven to seal the Championship. The New York Chapter of the BBWAA presented Howard with The Babe Ruth Award as the top player in the Series.Here we present a key artifact from that essential component in the 1958 World Championship season, a home white pinstriped flannel bearing the classic "NY" logo over the heart and Howard's fabled number "32," forever honored in Monument Park, on verso. The jersey exhibits splendid wear from Howard's second of nine consecutive All-Star seasons, with an embroidered "Howard" swatch at interior collar and number "58" stitched directly into the jersey tail. Proper "Spalding [size] 44" label appears above. A few small holes are little distraction, as our catalog imagery should indicate, and account for the points lost in the MEARS A8.5 assessment. Retired Yankees jerseys have beome progressively tougher with each passing year, and this example from what is arguably Howard's most memorable campaign is sure to fuel a fierce bidding war among advanced collectors.
